Eight Lucas County Hospitals are receiving a total of 12 upgraded two-way radios for emergency communications.

The new radios replace single band units currently in use with dual band ones and allow the added option of digital communications.

The radios were paid for by a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services grant. The grant proposal was submitted by members of Lucas County Amateur Radio Emergency Services (ARES).

If traditional communications fail, the new radios are a network link for: The Toledo Hospital, The University of Toledo Medical Center, St. Luke's Hospital, Mercy St. Anne Hospital, Mercy St. Charles Hospital, Baypark Hospital, Mercy St. Vincent's Medical Center, Flower Hospital, and emergency officials.
