Why is DOB required?
Why does Social hams require my birthdate? That is private information that I do not give out.

AI0K: Sorry for the long delay, but I haven't been on for a while.
It still doesn't allow me to update my profile without putting in a birthday. It has 0000-00-00 in the field, which I cannot erase (clicking on the field brings up a calendar, but the field itself is not editable). Trying to save says I can't join if I'm over 120 years old.

Not quite. When I go to update my settings, it has the birthdate of 0000-00-00 in the field. It can't be erased (clicking on it brings up a calendar), and when I try to save my settings with that date, it says "You cannot join this site if you are more than 120 years old."
